Someone posted a question on r/chch the other day that I couldn't scroll past. What's something Christchurch has genuinely gotten better at over the last 10 years? Went in expecting the usual pile-on, you know the type of thread. Instead I got a proper list, and honestly, a lot of it matched what I see out there every week, showing houses, talking to buyers, driving between appointments. Here's what stood out. The central city actually has a pulse For years, the strip felt half dead outside of summer.

A few people who work in hospitality reckon the last six months have been different, and I believe them. Even on a freezing Saturday night, town's been packed lately, queues outside bars, that kind of energy the central city just hasn't had in years. Riverside Market, Te Pae, the laneways, the Margaret Mahy playground. None of that was there 10 years ago. Give people a reason to actually go into town instead of driving past it, and turns out they will. The food scene isn't a punchline anymore More ethnic food, more variety, a proper food truck scene now too. Someone even called out how good access to waffles has gotten. A decade ago eating out here meant playing it pretty safe — I remember growing up going to Denny's and Lone Star for special occasions.
